In contrast to plastic, where there are no crosslinks between the polymer chains, rubber is therefore very difficult to recycle. Once rubber has taken on its solid form, it can no longer change shape. It can be compared to baking bread. This requires dough (rubber compound) to result in a well-done bread (rubber mold product) after baking. It is then not possible to make dough from this baked bread again. However, there are now various methods for recycling rubber.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"block-container\"><div class=\"wp-block-paragraph editor-styles\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"285\" height=\"214\" src=\"https:\/\/artechrubber.nl\/app\/uploads\/2025\/01\/EPDM-devulkanisaat.jpg\" alt=\"sustainable materials EPDM\" class=\"wp-image-1524\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"block-container\"><div class=\"wp-block-paragraph editor-styles\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How is rubber recycled?<\/h3>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-container\"><div class=\"wp-block-paragraph editor-styles\">\n<p>There are several ways to recycle and reuse rubber waste, such as production waste and end-of-life products:<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-container\"><div class=\"wp-block-paragraph editor-styles\">\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Granulation and grinding:<\/strong><br>Rubber is processed into a fine powder that can be added to new rubber compounds in a certain percentage.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pyrolyse:<\/strong><br>This converts rubber into carbon, which can then be used as an alternative to the filler carbon black in rubber compounds.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Devulkanisation:<\/strong><br>This is the most sustainable option in which crosslinks (sulphur bridges) in vulcanised rubber are broken. This produces the high-quality material rubber devulcanisate, which we can reprocess<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-container\"><div class=\"wp-block-paragraph editor-styles\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is vulkanization and devulkanization?<\/h3>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-container\"><div class=\"wp-block-paragraph editor-styles\">\n<p><strong>Vulkanization<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-container\"><div class=\"wp-block-paragraph editor-styles\">\n<p>Vulcanization is a process in which rubber is treated with sulfur and other vulcanizing agents under heat and pressure. This process:<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-container\"><div class=\"wp-block-paragraph editor-styles\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Improves the physical-mechanical properties of rubber.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Creates a crosslinked structure, which provides elasticity, strength, stiffness and durability.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-container\"><div class=\"wp-block-paragraph editor-styles\">\n<p><strong>Devulkanization<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-container\"><div class=\"wp-block-paragraph editor-styles\">\n<p>Devulcanization is the reverse process. In this process, the sulphur bridges in the rubber are broken, making the material plastic and processable again.
