Compression Moulding
Compression Moulding of rubber moulded products at Artech Rubber
At Artech Rubber we are specialized in producing high-quality rubber moulded products by means of compression moulding. This technique is ideal for the production of small to medium series and offers flexibility in the processing of various rubber compounds.
What is Compression Moulding?
Compression moulding is a production method in which a rubber preform (a pre-measured and shaped piece of rubber) is placed in a heated mould. Under the influence of heat and pressure, the rubber fills the mould, after which it hardens (vulcanises) and acquires the desired shape and properties. This technique is applied in compression moulds of various sizes, capacities and specifications, tailored to the application and production volumes.
How does Compression Moulding work?
The process consists of four steps:
- Placing the preform: A rubber preform is placed in the lower half of the heated mould.
- Closing the mould: The top half is closed, pressing the rubber into the desired shape.
- Heating and Curing: The mould heats the rubber to the correct vulcanization temperature, causing it to flow, fill the mould, and then harden (vulcanize).
- Cooling and removal: After the vulcanization time, the mould is opened and the formed product is removed.

Advantages of Compression Moulding
✔ Cost-effective: Ideal for low to medium production volumes with lower start-up costs than injection molding.
✔ Suitable for large parts: Perfect for thick, robust rubber products.
✔ Versatile materials: All types of rubber compounds can be processed, regardless of viscosity.
Disadvantages of Compression Moulding
- Longer cycle times: Each cycle takes longer because the rubber is manually placed and must first be heated.
- Limited complexity: Less suitable for very complex shapes.
- Labour-intensive: Especially for manual or semi-automatic systems
- Higher material consumption: More material is needed to build up sufficient pressure, thus more flash formation.
When production volumes increase, it can be attractive to switch to injection moulding, a technique that allows higher volumes to be produced more efficiently. At Artech Rubber, we can adapt moulds for compression moulding to be suitable for injection moulding.
